“Potes Amigues,” an innovative initiative in the emotional development of children

September 24, 2024

In a world where the well-being and education of children are more crucial than ever, we have launched “Potes Amigues” (that stands for “Friendly paws”), a programe designed to improve the social and emotional skills of young children. During the 2023-24 school year, it has been implemented in two high-complexity schools in Figueres (Girona): Escola Josep Pallach  and Escola Parc de les Aigües. This innovative project has positively impacted the lives of 100 five-year-old children, providing them with a valuable tool for learning and development.

The point of “Potes Amigues” is to enhance children's social and emotional skills through educational intervention with dogs, promoting the integration and emotional and social development of vulnerable children. The presence of these animals in the classroom not only improves learning capacity but also creates a calming and positive effect, with students learning to be more responsible and to resolve conflicts more effectively. Additionally, children improve their communication skills, increase empathy, and reduce anxiety levels.

Impact on early childhood

When Albert Marquès, Director of CTAC Girona and specialist in educational intervention with dogs, enters the classroom with the dogs, the atmosphere transforms as small hands reach out to stroke them and welcome their new four-legged friends. Albert highlights the progress made by extremely shy children with acquired insecurities and fears, who, thanks to "Potes Amigues", have gained confidence and security, actively participating in class. Another example is a child who has learned to better manage frustration and work as part of a team with classmates, skills that will be valuable throughout life.

The key is early intervention. Compared to previous projects where we worked with slightly older children, this year we are focusing on I5, that is, children aged 4 and 5. What has been shown is that this has greater impact and better results in high-complexity environments like the one we are working in,” explains Anna Veiga, Director of the Probitas Foundation.

"Potes Amigues” is much more than an educational project; it is an intervention that is transforming lives, enriching the educational experience in schools, and promoting a more inclusive and equitable future for all students.

With continued support from institutions and the community, this programme has the potential to continue making a significant difference in the lives of many more vulnerable children. In the 2024-25 school year, the programe will expand to two additional high-complexity schools in Figueres: Escola Salvador Dalí and Escola Anicet.

Scientific evidence

Research has shown that interaction with animals can be a powerful social catalyst, improving behaviour and the ability to adapt to new situations. The development of these executive functions from early childhood is essential for academic success.

Probitas' collaboration with Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) since 2019 has been key in scientifically validating the benefits of animal-assisted interventions. To date, three studies have been published that support the effectiveness of this approach in addressing mental disorders in a clinical setting.
