Strengthening health services for internally displaced persons to improve the fight against malaria, HIV / AIDS and tuberculosis in Wau, South Sudan

The project aims to provide a comprehensive response to the situation in the health center and to the problems regarding HIV, Malaria and Tuberculosis in the area. To reach this goal, the aim is to strengthen health services to improve treatment and thereby improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the surroundings of Wau in South Sudan.


CONTEXT

  • Sociodemographic data:

South Sudan has an area of 644,000 km2 and a population of 12.2 million, it presents a low population density: 19 inhab / km2. It is estimated that 85% of the population lives in rural areas.

  • Socio-political and health situation.

The country presents one of the most dramatic pictures of poverty and vulnerability in the world, with more than 3 decades of conflict. It has a life expectancy of 56 years and three quarters of the population without access to health care. The maternal mortality rate is one of the highest in the world.

 

PROJECT

  • Summary of project activities:

The main activities of the project are: the rehabilitation and improvement of the infrastructures of the health center; In addition, equipment will be purchased to improve diagnoses and expand health coverage to a greater number of patients, reducing waiting times. On the other hand, the health personnel of the center will be trained to improve detection, care and treatment of the people searching for health care. Lastly, and with the aim of prevention, a massive public awareness program will be carried out for both the patients who attend the clinic and for boys and girls, in two schools in the area.

BENEFICIARIES

The patients who are treated for in the clinic are low-income inhabitants of the surroundings of Wau. There are also many internally displaced persons living in the nearby camps. The total number of patients treated annually in the HIV, malaria and tuberculosis programs is 20,520, of which some 8,635 are women and 9,359 boys and girls under 15 years of age.
