Improving the health conditions of children in the poorest neighbourhoods of Bacolod, Philippines

The project, backed by the Fundación Madreselva and its local partner Servants of Mary, Ministers to the Sick (Siervas de María, Ministras de los Enfermos) aims to improve the quality of life for children in Bacolod.

The health situation in Bacolod is known for the prevalence of diseases that mainly affect its young population, including pneumonia, asthma, diarrhoea, malaria, dengue and tuberculosis.  To combat them the San Ezekiel Moreno Clinic in the area works in line with the "Integral Management of Childhood Illness" (IMCI) programme, and also with the WHO and UNICEF child health plans, towards the prevention and treatment of the most common diseases.

The main objective of the project is to improve the health conditions of children in the poorest neighbourhoods of the city of Bacolod. To achieve this, X-rays will be performed for the prevention and treatment of prevalent childhood diseases, families will be given the medicines necessary for the care of the different pathologies affecting the health of their children, and there will be talks and workshops on the prevention of prevalent diseases, as well as awareness of public and personal hygiene.

The direct beneficiaries of the project are 5,842 children in the neighbourhoods of Handumanan and Felisa. Indirect beneficiaries are the 36,000 inhabitants of Handumanan and Felisa.
